Terna’s high – tech lab in Sardinia

Shutterstock 188845361250.000 extension’ squared meters, 70 millions euro’s investment, 40 companies and more of 100 people getting involved. These are the numbers of high – tech lab realized by Terna at Codrongianos (Sassari), first time opened on November 17th. Structure born to support and protect electrical grids, equipped, as reported on note, with state of the art technologies like storage systems, synchronous compensators and last generation’ submarine cables. In particular, the structure uses at the same time seven different technologies in storage field. The project, as reported on note, will be a sort of “lab – isle” to test new technologies and smart grid, one of the crucial center in a research structures’ network that Terna chases even in other our country’s locations, inside the Smart Island project, started at Giglio, Giannutri, Pantelleria and Certosa to integrate renewable, storage system and electric mobility for a safer, more efficient and sustainable network.

PLANNED DEVELOPMENT’S INTERVENTIONS IN SARDINIA

Codrongianos’ pole isn’t the only venture conducted by Terna in Sardinia. In fact, the company planned a development interventions, modernization and management’ sequence for transmission’s electric network – for about 200 millions’ total costs, to add at the 800 million already spent in the area during the last ten years – directed to solve actual criticalities and effectively improving islander electric system, both in quality and energy supplying’ continuity . In particular, belong to project Cagliari’s area network reorganization, “S.Teresa-Tempio-Buddusò” and “Selargius-Goni” lines, Selegas’ electric station and Gallura’s electric network strengthening interventions.

I’m very proud to show you, for the very first time, the real Italian excellence of Codrongianos’ technology hub. This place for decades represented a key point for Sardinia and Italy’s electrification narrative and by now it’ll be more and more in the future, thanks to our young engineers and national companies’ work, all collaborating at this venture. Terna’s task for the electric network’s progression in the region doesn’t stop here: we planned about 200 million’ investment to make electric system more and more efficient, safe, sustainable and, above all, to complete as best as we can renewable, making Sardinia one of the higher green vocation’s region in our country” commented on a note Terna’ CEO Matteo del Fante.

OTHER DEVELOPED PROJECTS ON SARDINIA AREA

In addition to the new lab, Sardinia hosts the two early Terna’s synchronous compensators, attended for a better renewable management; SA.PE.I. submariner cable, connecting the isle with the rest of Italy is the deepest all over the world and SA.CO.I. connecting Sardinia with Italy throw Corsica, first three-terminal high voltage direct current’s connection first in the world, is working since 5o years. Lastly, in Sulcis Terna manages the Lanpris (Laboratorio Naturale Prova Isolatori, Natural Lab Insulator Proof), a sort of experimental proof field to test network insulators’ features (devices trellises’ arranged to support and isolate from the same trellises the electric cables carrying energy).
